1) Feeling: A tree symbolizes growth. There are three parts to a tree: the roots, the trunk, and the branches. I chose a tree as my wide scope image because a pattern I saw throughout my writing was cause and effect and also the eagerness of growth. A tree fits this well because the roots represent all the sources of my identity such as the one’s I discussed as a part of MyStory: community, family, entertainment, and career. The roots of a tree are where the trunk grows from, just as all these discourses have made me who I am. Who I am is symbolic of a trunk of a tree, my identities such as a good girl, a college student, a marketing major. The branches describe what I have done or aspire to do with the knowledge and experiences I have gained. A tree is constantly growing more roots, a bigger trunk, and more branches, just as I am constantly developing my identity.
2) Metaphysics: A tree shows that world is continually branching off as mankind discovers new things, but at the same time it remains a stable unit. It also represents that we all share common resources that shape our identities. For instance we all have some mode of family, school discourse, entertainment, and some sort of job we aspire for or have already obtained. Yet we all do different things with the roots we have. Some people may be complex and have many diverse branches while others remain simpler with only several different branches. For example, there are people who have various hobbies, different social networks, and hold many different jobs throughout their life. Then there are people who choose to have one steady job, a small group of friends, and one serious hobby. However, everyone is ultimately shaped first most by their sources of identity, or their discourses.
3) Morality: Therefore this shows that it is truly up to the individual what they do with the knowledge and discourse they possess. It is also up to the individual to make the most out of their different discourses, and to create new knowledge by creating connections between them. The tree also shows that we have the ability to constantly grow and create more and more branches. Therefore we should also be expanding our knowledge and identity.
